His Majesty! The Barolo

Wine, Landscape, Lifestyle
Date
November 2023
Location
Serralunga d'Alba, Castiglione Falletto, Canale
Possibly the ultimate example of wine culture in Italy: the Barolo, heavy-body red from Nebbiolo grape.
Forget the marketing behind the Super Tuscans. The Langhe area, a stretch of land between hills in North West Italy, Piedmont region, is home to generations of local families who face cold and foggy days out in the vineyards and age supreme nectar with love in their centuries-old cellars.
We visited Cantina Palladino (palladinovini.com) where the communication manager Veronica took us for a quite revealing tour of the historical winery, shared technical information, and explained how strict the Italian legislation is when it comes to wine production (unlike some other Countries). Every single wine we tasted was outstanding! For those who are after perfection, tradition, and the proper taste of Langhe, they can't go wrong with Palladino: Barolo Parafada DOCG and the Riserva San Bernardo DOCG are only two of their finest selection.
We then stopped by Livia Fontana Winery in Castiglione Falletto (liviafontana.it) to taste a selection of her products. We did our homework upfront, having tried and preciously stocked her famous Barolo DOCG Riserva Bussia a few months back. Here the local tradition embraces Signora Fontana's vision like the Langhe Doc Rosso Insieme (together) from Barbera and Nebbiolo grapes, aged 30 months.
On our way back home we drove up north to Canale, Alta Langhe to pay a visit to Enrico Serafino Winery (enricoserafino.it), one of the finest Alta Langhe Docg Metodo Classico Millesimato from Chardonnay and Pinot Nero grapes. If you are after acid, savory well balanced for your New Year's Eve party go for one of their Pas Dose' Zero or ExtraBrut Parcellaire
